Acupuncture: When All Else Fails

Oftentimes, a new patient will come to my office for a consultation. Shortly into the interview, they report that they have had a particular problem for a long time, have seen several specialists, had numerous tests and procedures, but still either have the original problem or have side effects from either the medications or procedures/surgeries used to attempt to help them. They report numerous symptoms which, in western medicine, have no relationship to each other. This is where Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) excels. Our intake and diagnostic questioning takes all physical symptoms and looks for specific patterns. By identifying these patterns and basing our treatments on those patterns, patients not only begin to get relief from the chief problem they have had, but notice other positive health changes in other areas of their body. Additionally, many report an improvement in sleep and energy as well.

It is important to remember that long standing, chronic problems often require regular acupuncture treatment for several weeks to help the body recover.

With acupuncture treatment, we look at all factors affecting your health and help with creating lifestyle changes that will help you get the best possible effects from your acupuncture care.

Why Acupuncture for Chronic Illness?

While acupuncture is well known for helping people who suffer from chronic pain, many are not aware that acupuncture can effectively help people with longstanding chronic health problems such as infertility, anxiety and depression, migraines, as well as chronic pain which has not been relieved by other methods.

Acupuncture is very safe when practiced by a qualified Licensed Acupuncturist (L.Ac.). Acupuncturists are trained to help the body use its own healing mechanisms without side effects, which makes it an ideal inclusion in the treatment of complex or difficult to treat conditions.

Most chronic health conditions rarely “just happen.” The body often gives signals that something isn’t quite right: Fatigue, changes in sleep patterns, digestive issues such as bloating, diarrhea, constipation, acid reflux, IBS, headaches which become more frequent and intense, anxiety or depression, aches and pains brushed off as “aging” or told to “learn to live with”, and menstrual cycles which are irregular or excessively uncomfortable.

Of course, it is important to have a medical evaluation by your primary care provider to perform the necessary tests to make sure symptoms are not caused by a life threatening health issue. Many times, patients will be prescribed medications or treatments which have unwanted side effects, or the medications help, but not enough.

Over the years, I have found that chronic health problems tend to respond well to acupuncture care. Acupuncturists are trained on how to interview patients to identify “patterns” based on Traditional Chinese medical principles which view the body as a whole. Each patient is a “puzzle” to be solved. The initial consultation with a patient is used to put the pieces of the puzzle together by asking questions about their body, from the top of the head to the tip of the toes. Information gathered by this dialogue helps the acupuncturist see patterns which have contributed to why the person is seeking help.

What types of chronic conditions might be helped with acupuncture?

  • Allergies
  • Chronic respiratory infections
  • Digestive issues such as IBS and reflux
  • Chronic pain
  • Side effects of chemotherapy
  • Headaches
  • Mild to moderate depression
  • PMS or menopausal symptoms
  • Interstitial cystitis
  • Infertility in both men and women
A frequent question I get from a new patient is, “How many treatments will it take?” Factors which go into answering this question and creating a treatment plan include several variables.
  • How long have you had the problem
  • Age
  • Current quality of general health
  • Dietary habits
  • Amount and type of current exercise
  • How well you currently sleep
All of these factors can influence the number of treatments recommended for a particular condition. Part of working with me will include lifestyle counseling about things you can do to help acupuncture treatments work efficiently.

Infertility Issues

Infertility issues in both men and women are on the rise in our country. Infertility is defined as the failure to conceive after 12 months or more of unprotected intercourse. Both men and women should be evaluated by their physician to detect underlying issues which may be affecting fertility. Acupuncture can be used to help regulate menstrual cycles and improve the overall health of the woman so that pregnancy can occur naturally. With men, acupuncture can help improve the sperm quality which includes motility, concentration, and morphology. Couples undergoing IVF treatment may have increased success of pregnancy with the addition of acupuncture treatments, particularly before and after embryo transfer. Acupuncture points are based on a Traditional Chinese Medical diagnosis and can include acupuncture points located on the lower legs, abdomen, back, and ears.
